Clinicoepidemiological study of acanthosis nigricans in pre and primary school children and its association with body mass index, waist circumference and insulin resistance

Acanthosis nigricans is characterised by hyperpigmentation and velvet like thickening of skin. It seen symmetrically involving the neck, axilla, groins, antecubital popliteal fossae, umbilical, perianal areas in advanced conditions, even dorsum hands fingers. To evaluate clinical features epidemiological factors acanthosis pre primary school children to association with body mass index, waist circumference insulin resistance. A total 100 meeting defined inclusion exclusion criteria were enrolled this cross-sectional study after taking an informed consent approval institutional ethical committee. All parents subjected a detailed history based on questionnaire. thorough examination was done nigricans. Blood samples collected fasting serum blood sugar determined. Most boys (M:F=1.3:1) mean age 6.66±1.99 years. Twenty four percent normal weight, 28% overweight 48% obese children. On examination, neck commonest site Grade 4 severity (p=0.0014) grade 3 texture (P=0.0198) significantly associated Insulin resistance (HOMA2-IR). eight 42.8% 75% had normal, Hence, we would propose that all must be screened for irrespective index. With evidence resistance, guidelines can given about life style modification which will help preventing onset diabetes mellitus later thereby, improving quality child.
